Troubleshoot custom themes and missing assets

Check plan access, filters, file permissions, uploaded assets, and local styling.

Theme problems can come from access restrictions, missing assets, or local styling that differs from the theme. Check the symptom before replacing the design.

A theme or builder action is unavailable

Open Account and confirm custom-theme access. In Themes, enable the Custom filter and clear search if the theme is missing from the list.

Theme management actions also depend on workspace permissions. If a teammate can see controls that you cannot, check your workspace access rather than assuming the theme is broken.

A file-backed theme cannot load

Open its Google Slides file directly using the same Google account. Check whether the file was deleted, moved to trash, or shared with a different account. For a workspace, use the available theme-access control and confirm the required access.

Keep the supported layouts and at least one slide in the theme file. See Use a Google Slides theme file.

A logo or background is missing

Open Branding and verify that the asset is present. Return to the slide controls and explicitly select the correct asset or logo variant. An empty picker needs an uploaded asset before selection is possible.

Check image URLs or assets in the underlying file-backed theme when applicable.

A slide does not match the theme

Inspect the slide’s contextual settings for local customizations. Reset the relevant settings only after reading the scope confirmation. Give fonts time to load before judging the final appearance, and check managed Google Slides output separately after syncing.

If the problem continues, include the theme name, affected slide, and exact error in a support request.
